Department of Wood Structures focuses on wood based structures and wood products for buildings, considering various aspects. They include: building design, production technology, structural statics, building physics, room and building acoustics, energy efficiency, durability, and properties of building materials and products for buildings. Some of the specialized areas are thermal and moisture parameters of wood based building envelope, optimization of indoor environment, mechanical properties of constructions and structural elements. It also deals with timber and wood products processing and manufacturing technology, properties of structural wood based materials. There are specialized laboratories for thermal and mechanical property research, including various equipment (warm-cold testing box, infrared camera, Blower-Door testing package, a sample test building, monitoring devices for indoor and outdoor environment and others). Students can use laboratories for computer graphics and building simulation. The Department also deals with wood quality evaluation for building structures in term of its properties determined in accordance with EN using destructive and non-destructive tests. There are several test devices available: Sylvatest DUO, MTG Timber Grader, PILODYN 6J. The Department participates in the research conducted by companies working on ultra-low energy buildings.
